Prawn Masala

I have been learning few recipes every weekend. Yesterday I made prawn masala which turned out fairly good, alhumdulillah. I have also included in the post what I learnt while trying out this gravy! :) I didnt click a picture so will update this post with a pic next time I cook the same ;) inshaAllah

Ingredients:

  • 26 medium sized prawns (Yes I counted the prawns but dont know how much they weighed :P)
  • 6 medium size onions
  • 2 tomatoes
  • 1.5 tsp Ginger garlic paste
  • 1 tsp chilli powder
  • 1 tsp salt
  • pinch of turmeric
  • 1 tsp corionder powder (dhanya)
  • 2 full chillies (just cut a lil on top vertically such as to open it)
  • 1 glass water
  • about 15 tbsp oil (yes i counted that too! :D)

Method:

1. Clean the prawns and keep them in a bowl of water with a pinch of haldi.
2.In a pan add the oil, sliced onions and chillies. Fry well until onions turn golden brown.
3. Add all the masalas, ginger garlic paste and tomatoes and fry well.
4, Add the water and let it boil for some time.
5. Finally add the prawns and mix well.
5. Sprinkle some cut corionder on top.
6.Serve hot with plain rice and dal.

Things I learnt while cooking this:

  • Letting the prawns soak in haldi water helps to reduce the smell of prawns.
  • I once burnt the masala while cooking khuska, so ever since I am afraid to fry the onions for long. This has been resulting in the onions remaining still visible which generally shouldnt be the case in a gravy. Trying to get a grip of how much is ok to fry. InshaAllah so next time will make sure that onion is properly fried and only then add water.
  • After adding the tomatoes too the mixture needs to be fried well so you dont get pieces of tomatoes as it is.
  • Prawns need to be added in extreme end and need to be cooked for approximately 5 mins. Since over cooking of any sea food item can make them hard! So always add them in the end and dont leave it for too long.
  • Additionally if you hate the smell that raw prawns leave behind in your hand then wash your hands with wheat flour. It will pull away the smell in a jiffy ;) inshaAllah
